The best gifts for someone who moved interstate depend on where they're up to. While they're still unpacking, send something small and useful: good coffee, a dinner voucher for a place in their new suburb, a notebook for the never-ending list. Once the boxes are flat and the novelty has worn off, send something for the walls, or a box that just says you miss them.
That's the short answer. The longer one covers what to skip, what costs nothing, the time-zone gap if they've gone west, and the small habits that stop a friendship shrinking to birthday texts.
What to send, depending on where they're up to
A move isn't one moment. It's a messy few weeks of boxes, then a burst of setting up, then a quieter stretch when the new routine settles in and the old one is still on their mind. The right gift changes with each.
Where they're up to
What helps
Ideas
Still unpacking
Small, useful, nothing that needs a home
Coffee, a dinner voucher for their new suburb, a notebook for the to-do list, a long phone charger
Setting up the new place
Things that make it feel lived in
Something for the bare wall, a candle, a voucher for a local nursery, nice tea towels
The novelty's worn off
Something about them, not the house
A letter, a miss-you box, a visit on the calendar, a taste of the old local
If you're stuck, ask what they're missing. People who've just moved will tell you, usually as a complaint. "I can't find a decent coffee anywhere" is a gift brief. So is "I keep forgetting I don't own a colander."
Gifts for when they're still unpacking
Keep it small. They're surrounded by stuff already, and anything big or decorative becomes one more thing to find a spot for. The good gifts at this stage solve a problem.
A food delivery voucher, or better, a gift card for one specific place near their new address. You've done the research. They just have to turn up hungry.
A supermarket voucher. Unglamorous, and very welcome after the third "we're out of literally everything" shop.
Coffee or tea that doesn't need a machine. Nobody knows where the plunger is yet, so drip bags beat beans.
A notebook for the running list of things to buy, fix and email the agent about.
A phone charger long enough to reach a mattress on the floor.
Skip anything fragile, anything enormous and anything flat-pack. They've just spent a weekend with an Allen key and a removalist who was three hours late. They don't want another project.
Housewarming gifts once they've settled in
Send the housewarming gift once they're properly in, so it isn't sitting outside an empty unit or dodging boxes in the hallway. This is when the walls are bare, the place smells of cardboard and somebody else's paint, and things that make it feel lived in finally have somewhere to go.
Something for the wall. If they're renting, check before you send anything that needs a nail. Removable hooks exist for a reason.
A candle. The default housewarming gift, which is exactly why one with a scent they actually like beats a random one.
A plant, bought locally. A voucher for a nursery near them beats posting a plant across the country. If they've moved to WA or Tasmania, plants and soil are the kind of thing you should check before you send.
An outing in the new city. A class, a tour, a cinema voucher. Anything that gets them out of the house and walking the new streets.
The early weeks are busy. New job, new commute, new supermarket where nothing's in the right aisle. Then it settles, and Sunday afternoons stretch a bit longer than they used to. The group chat back home keeps making plans they can't get to. That's when a gift about them, not the house, does its best work.
A proper letter in the post. Mail that isn't a bill is rare enough now to feel like an event.
"Open when" letters: open when the new job's being a pain, open when you miss the old crew, open when you've made a friend.
A taste of their old local. If the bakery or roaster from their old suburb ships, a bag of the familiar stuff is very specific comfort.
A visit on the calendar. Even a rough one. A date to count down to changes how the weeks in between feel.
A box that turns up on a random Wednesday, for no reason at all, lands harder than one on a birthday because nobody saw it coming. Our thinking-of-you gift boxes are made for that.
Gifts that cost next to nothing
Some of the best moving gifts aren't things. They're habits that keep you in each other's week.
A hand-drawn map of their new suburb, researched by you: best pie, nearest beach or bushwalk, the pub with the good trivia night.
A shared playlist where you each add a song a week. It turns into a diary of what you've both been up to.
A shared photo album of the old crew, so the group can keep adding to it.
The standing call. Same day, same time, adjusted for the time difference. Sunday morning works because nobody's rushing.
Watch-along nights. Start the same show and text through it, or press play together on a video call.
The postcode changed. The Sunday call can stay exactly where it was.
Mind the time difference
An interstate move can quietly put someone in a different time zone, and that's where a lot of catch-ups fall over. Perth is 2 hours behind Sydney, and 3 hours behind during eastern daylight saving, which runs from October to April. Queensland has no daylight saving either, so Brisbane and Sydney drift an hour apart over summer.
So your 8pm call is their 5pm commute if they've landed in Perth. Add their city to your phone's world clock. Swap live calls for voice notes on busy weeks. And send parcels where they'll actually be: a Parcel Locker can beat a doorstep for someone who works long days. If they've gone west, we've written a guide to care packages for someone who moved to Perth.
If you'd rather send a box
We're Lewis and Jess, and we pack every Same Skies box ourselves in Sydney. Two of our boxes fit a move better than the rest.
The New Beginning Box is the unpacking-stage one. It has a Canvas-Bound A5 Notebook in a colour you choose (hello, list of things to buy), a Café Latte Candle poured into a reusable coffee cup, a Pour-Over Coffee Duo, Marc de Champagne Truffles, Australian Macadamias and an A3 Matte Art Print. The print is A3 and unframed, so it suits someone with a bit of wall space and a frame in mind. Two drip bags means one for now and one for the morning you call.
The New Beginning Box, for the list of things to buy and the coffee to drink while writing it. See what's inside.
For the quieter stretch, Hug Away From Home is the softer pick: a Botanical Bath Soak, a Hand-Poured Soy Candle (hand-poured in Australia), a Crochet Comfort Companion, Marc de Champagne Truffles, Candy Kittens Strawberry sweets and the print. You pick the candle scent, the print and the crochet character. We'd go the pickle.
Know exactly what they'd love? Build your own box: the Twilight Box holds 6 gifts and the Midnight Box holds 8. If the person who moved is your closest mate, our gifts for best friends lean into the in-jokes.
Whichever you choose, your words live behind a QR code on a premium card inside the box. Add a message of up to 280 characters for free, plus a photo or a video. They point their phone camera at the code and it opens on their screen. Photos and videos replay for around six months, so a clip of the old crew yelling hello from the pub gets more than one watch.
Before you send it
Confirm the new address. Ask casually. Unit numbers and suburb spellings are where new addresses go wrong.
Check they've actually moved in. A parcel outside an empty flat is a parcel at risk.
PO Boxes and Parcel Lockers are fine, except for wine. A Poco Vino Piccolo add-on needs someone 18+ to sign for it at a street address, and wine can't be delivered to the NT.
Allow 3-7 business days order to door for most of Australia. Regional and remote addresses can take longer, and tracking is emailed to you, so the surprise stays a surprise.
Choose every piece yourself, pick a print that feels like them, then add your letter with a photo or video behind the QR card. We hand-pack it in Sydney and send it free.

While they're unpacking, small and useful wins: coffee, a dinner voucher for a place near their new address or a notebook for the to-do list. Once they've settled, send something for the walls or a miss-you gift that's about them rather than the house.
Should I send a housewarming gift before or after they move in?
After. Wait until they're properly in so the parcel doesn't sit outside an empty home or get lost among the boxes.
What's a cheap gift for a friend who moved away?
A hand-drawn map of their new suburb, a shared playlist, a proper letter or a standing weekly call all cost next to nothing. A visit on the calendar, even a rough one, is often the gift they'll value most.
What's the time difference between Sydney and Perth?
Perth is 2 hours behind Sydney, and 3 hours behind during eastern daylight saving from October to April, because WA has no daylight saving. Queensland has no daylight saving either.
Can I send food to a friend who moved to WA or Tasmania?
Both states have biosecurity rules, and fresh fruit and vegetables, plants and soil are the risky ones. Check the official rules before you send fresh food, and contact Quarantine WA or Biosecurity Tasmania if you're unsure.
How long does a Same Skies box take to arrive interstate?
Boxes are hand-packed in Sydney Monday to Friday and sent with Australia Post. Order to door is 3-7 business days for most of Australia, and regional and remote addresses can take longer.
Send a piece of home to the new place
