Gifts for Someone Moving to Australia: Leaving Presents and Care Packages

Leaving presents that won't eat their luggage allowance, a care package timed for the wobble after they land, what you can post from the UK, and how to stay close.

The short answer

Gifts for Someone Moving to Australia

The best gifts for someone moving to Australia come in two parts. Before they fly, give something that weighs next to nothing: a letter for the plane, a few printed photos, a date in the diary for a video call. Then, a few weeks after they've landed, send a care package to their new address.

That split matters because the two moments want different things. At the leaving do, every gram counts against their luggage. Once they're there, a box at the door can do what a present at the airport can't: arrive just when the excitement has worn off and the admin hasn't.

Whatever their airline allows in the hold, they've already filled it, probably twice. So the leaving gift should fit in a coat pocket or an inbox. A few that work:

  • A letter to open on the plane. Long-haul flights have a lot of hours in them, and one of them should be yours.
  • Half a dozen printed photos, small enough to tuck into a passport wallet or stick on a new fridge.
  • A voucher for something in their new city, like a surf lesson, a meal out or a day trip, bought online and emailed. It weighs nothing and gives them a reason to get out the door.
  • A shared playlist, or a voice note to play when they land.
  • A firm date for your next video call, already in both calendars.

Skip the hamper for the flight. Australia's biosecurity rules mean travellers have to declare certain food, plant material and animal products at the border, and anything that doesn't pass goes in the bin at the airport. Big framed prints, heavy books and anything fragile can wait too. Ask instead where they'll be living, then plan something to arrive there.

If they've already got an address lined up, a box can be waiting for them. We pack ours by hand in Sydney and send them with Australia Post, so it's a domestic Australian delivery that never goes through customs. More on that in our guide to how you send a gift to Australia from the UK.

Once they've landed: match the package to where they are

A friend who has just moved to Australia might be delighted, exhausted, busy or still deciding where to put the kettle. Start with their circumstances. Are they living out of a suitcase, sharing a house or unpacking somewhere they hope to stay? A gift that fits their week will be easier to enjoy than something they need to store, assemble or carry to the next address.

Timing matters as much as contents. There's often a wobble a few weeks in, once the novelty fades and the bank account, the lease and the new job are all asking for things. Nobody can put a date on it, them included. Keep asking how they're actually doing, and send something when the replies get shorter.

If they're still travelling or in temporary accommodation

Choose compact things that earn their place in a bag. A journal can hold travel plans and small discoveries. A sleep mask could be useful on journeys, while treats give them something to enjoy without adding lasting clutter.

The Traveller Box includes a Cabana Beach Towel, Hardcover Travel Journal, Hardwood Pen & Bamboo Case, Honeycomb Chocolate Thins, Passport Wallet & Tag Set and a Mulberry Silk Sleep Mask. It may suit a friend whose move includes time exploring. Check what they packed already, and confirm where they can receive a parcel before ordering. An accommodation address may need the host's agreement and the recipient's booking name.

If they've just found a place to live

Think about the routines that make a new address feel familiar: morning coffee, somewhere to jot down ideas, or a quiet evening after unpacking.

The New Beginning Box includes a Canvas-Bound A5 Notebook, Café Latte Candle, A3 Matte Art Print (unframed), Marc de Champagne Truffles, a Pour-Over Coffee Duo and Australian Macadamias. Check whether they enjoy scented candles, and remember the print is unframed, so they'll need a frame or a bit of wall.

If they've told you they're missing home

A familiar photograph and a few things they enjoy can be a gentle way to say you're thinking of them. Follow their lead in the message rather than telling them how they should feel about the move.

The Hug Away From Home Box combines a Botanical Bath Soak, a Hand-Poured Soy Candle, Marc de Champagne Truffles, Candy Kittens Strawberry sweets, a Crochet Comfort Companion and an A3 Matte Art Print (unframed). Check that a bath product makes sense in their new home and that they have space for the print. If only some of those items suit, build your own gift box instead.

A care package of things Brits miss: post it or buy it there?

Most homesick Brits can name their list without thinking: proper tea, a specific chocolate bar, the biscuits from home. Some of it can go in the post, some of it can't, and some isn't worth the postage.

What usually can go, according to Australia's Department of Agriculture: plain black tea in clean, unopened packaging; commercially made and packaged chocolate with no meat in it; and biscuits, cake or Christmas pudding that are fully cooked, shelf stable and meat-free. What can't: anything fresh, chilled or frozen, which Royal Mail won't carry to Australia anyway. Every item needs listing on the customs form, and 'gift' on its own isn't an acceptable description. Our guide to sending food gifts to Australia goes item by item.

Then there's the honest maths. On 21 October 2026, Royal Mail listed International Tracked to Australia at £19.40 online for a parcel up to 1kg, and that's before you've bought anything to put in it. So post the things that are light, specific and irreplaceable, like the tea they swear by or a bar of the chocolate they grew up on. Anything heavy, bulky or likely to melt in an Australian summer is easier to sort out locally, so ask before you post: they may have found it on a shelf already. Our step-by-step guide to sending a parcel to Australia from the UK covers the forms, packing and prices.

Post the things that can't be bought there. Let the rest be someone else's problem.

Keep the contents manageable

Choose a small selection around one moment, such as a coffee break or a relaxed evening at home. Check their current food preferences and read product information, including ingredients and allergens, before choosing treats.

It's worth asking a simple question before you buy: "Have you got everything you need for your morning coffee yet?" You may learn more from that than from a long list of gift suggestions, while keeping the actual present a surprise.

Add a message they can enjoy without needing to reply

Your words live behind a QR code on a premium card inside the box. Add a message of up to 280 characters for free, plus a photo or a video if you like. They point their phone camera at the code and it opens on their screen, and photos and videos replay for around six months. Choose a photograph tied to a happy shared memory, or record a quick hello in your usual voice.

For a friend settling in, try: "A few things for a proper coffee break. Hope the unpacking is going well and you've found somewhere good for lunch. No need to reply while you're busy. Looking forward to hearing about your new neighbourhood whenever you're ready."

If they've said they feel homesick: "I miss our catch-ups too. Sending something small for a quiet evening. I'm here for the good bits and the wobbly bits, whenever you fancy a chat."

Long-distance friendship rituals that actually last

The gift is the easy bit. Keeping a friendship going across the world takes a few habits, and the ones that stick are the ones that don't feel like homework.

Find a call slot you can both keep. In December, Sydney is 11 hours ahead of the UK, so lunchtime for you is late evening for them, and the gap shifts when the clocks change at either end. Pick a regular time and protect it. Watch the same match or the same show and message along as it happens, even if one of you is watching on catch-up. Send voice notes when you can't call; they're the closest thing to a chat over a brew. Keep a shared photo album going in both directions. And when a parcel or a box lands, open it together on video: half the fun is watching their face.

Birthdays are where distance shows. Put theirs in the calendar with a reminder well ahead, and our birthday gift ideas for friends in Australia will help when it comes round.

Make sure the parcel fits their plans

Confirm the address and whether they'll still be there when it's expected to arrive. Don't rely on an unconfirmed move-in date. Our boxes are packed by hand in Sydney, Monday to Friday, and sent with Australia Post, usually arriving 2 to 5 business days after dispatch to most addresses, with regional and remote areas taking longer. Tracking is emailed to you, so you'll know when to expect the video call.

Build your own

Questions people ask

What is a good leaving gift for someone moving to Australia?

Something that weighs next to nothing, because their luggage is already full: a letter to open on the plane, a few printed photos, a voucher for something in their new city, or a date in the diary for a video call. Save anything bigger for a care package once they've got an address.

Can I give them food to take on the plane to Australia?

It's best not to. Travellers have to declare certain food, plant material and animal products at the Australian border, and anything that doesn't meet the rules can be binned at the airport.

When should I send a care package to a friend who moved to Australia?

There's no fixed date, but a few weeks in is often when the novelty fades and the admin piles up. Keep asking how they're really doing and send something when the replies get shorter.

Can I post tea, chocolate and biscuits to Australia from the UK?

Generally yes, if they meet the conditions: plain black tea in clean unopened packaging, commercially packaged chocolate with no meat, and biscuits that are fully cooked, shelf stable and meat-free. List every item on the customs form rather than writing 'gift'.

Can I send a gift that's already in Australia?

Yes. Same Skies boxes are packed by hand in Sydney and delivered by Australia Post, so it's a domestic Australian delivery that never goes through customs, with free delivery on every box.
